In my lectures 9 years ago I've felt the absence of a chapter with applications in science and technology. It's great condition, for an awesome price. Shipped on time. The book itself, while not the most recent edition, is very clear in explaining the principles of linear algebra. This is a good book for linear algebra beginners. Book arrived in due time. I am satisfied doing business with them. Good business! I need this for a class. the book condition was just as stated and i am happy to get this book in such a good condition.
Also got the book before due time. Most undergraduates find the transition into mathematical abstraction as tender an experience as their heads coming into contact with a policeman's baton. Anton's approach, though still harrowing for some, elementary linear algebra 8th edition pdf download, softens the force of the blow by replacing the wooden baton with a down pillow.
There is a logical continuity to the organization of the textbook, and the pedagogical progression is relatively seamless from vectors in 2 and 3-space, to Rn, to general vector spaces; transitioning successfully to the world of Euclidean vector spaces is the sine qua non of Linear Algebra and higher mathematics.
My criticism is that Anton gives equal weight to the presentation of topics on either side of the abstraction gap; a student would benefit from a greater emphasis on a geometrical interpretation before leaping into the emotionally eviscerating world of Euclidean n-space. Another minor criticism is that the introduction of Linear Transformations and Eigenvectors, following a presentation of Rn and general vector spaces, reduces the experience to an unwholesome white noise after being supersaturated with concepts in the world of abstraction.
There is little basis for evaluation at this point, and injecting a brief introduction to Linear Transformations and Eigenvectors into the mix might hamstring most hopefuls in the subject. Now the bad bits: the printing errors with three-page erratum.
Most annoying, but not half as unforgivably egregious as not including all of the answers to the questions in the back of the book. I will always owe a debt of gratitude to Anton for rescuing me from the bottomlessly awful Linear Algebra textbook that accompanied my course, and a textbook elementary linear algebra 8th edition pdf download was as much of a comfort to me as pile surgery. Anton's approach is to introduce the notation and basic tools, i. vector and matrix arithmetic, within the intuitive geometric settings of the Euclidean plane and space. Once the basic concepts of Euclidean vector spaces have been mastered, Anton moves into abstract vector spaces, linear transformations, and eigenvectors.
One chapter is spent on complex matrices, and another chapter deals with numerical issues and least-squares applications. The only topic which is noticably missing is the singular value decomposition, but other than that, Anton is a remarkably complete text.
The definitions and theorems are clearly presented, along with the motivating intuitions. The exercises at the end of the chapter sections are a nice balance between computational and elementary linear algebra 8th edition pdf download problems. Overall I highly recommend Anton as a first linear algebra text. I've been teaching out of Anton's Linear Algebra books for 17 years, and I'm especially impressed with the 8th edition.
Difficult concepts are visited again and again in increasing levels of abstraction, easing students into them. I'm amazed at the organization of topics.
